Evidence
Studies have demonstrated significant increase in first pass success of intubation when a bougie is used (95% vs 86%)1. The Bougie beats the Stylet in first pass success (96% vs 82%)2. A recent study comparing various techniques on ‘difficult’ airways, demonstrated improved first pass success (90% vs 75%). and time to intubation (30 vs 43 seconds). with the pre-loaded vs the standard ‘rail road’ technique. Participants in this study increased their preference for the pre-loaded bougie from (31-70%)3.
